FLIGHTS

Nearly every great trip starts with searching for flights and there are more ways than ever to do it. But with so many booking websites it can be overwhelming trying to find out how to book the best flights.

The more you research your flights, the more you will be able to spot a great fare when it pops up. Don’t shy away from flights with long layovers, we have had some amazing times on 24-hour layovers.  If you are booking long-haul flights use the multicity search function as you can sometimes break up the trip.

Don’t be scared of long flights, you are missing out on seeing the world by staying close to home.

My flight research always starts with Google Flights, I find its a great way to begin and get an idea of the pricing for a particular route. One of my favourite things about the search function is to just put your departure city and a date range but leave the arrival city empty. Google will then give you a list of flights to everywhere and you can filter by price.

We have been using Momondo to search for flights for the last few years and find it to be a great search engine. You can set price alerts, use the multi-city tool and easily navigate search results to find the best flights. Whenever possible book directly with the airline, some third-party sites can cause issues if changes are needed and are painful to deal with.

Skyscanner is a great tool for searching for cheap flights as it searches hundreds of booking and airline websites to find the best fares. We usually end up booking off the platform but find the website to be a valuable search engine when researching an upcoming trip. It has an easy-to-use interface and provides quick results.

Kiwi has some unique options that are worth a look when researching your next trip. Have a look at their travel hack section. This section will piece together routes that other sites won’t by using self-transfer flights, or throwaway tickets to get you where you want to go for less. You can book directly from the website.

If you are searching for flights from the USA then Going (formerly Scotts Cheap Flights) is a great resource. It is a membership site so you do have to sign up but there is a free version or a monthly paid version for access to more deals. Its a beautifully designed website and there are lots of resources to help with your next trip.

If you are based on the Westcoast of Canada, then checking out YVR deals is a great website to find low airfare. We use YVR Deals all the time and it has alerted us to deals we would never have found without it. It has a good Facebook group that is also really helpful when booking trips from the Westcoast.
