Raglan is located on West coast of the North Island and is one of the best surfing destinations in New Zealand.Rugged Black sand beaches and the epic surf breaks of Ngarunui Beach and the long break at Manu Bay.
We’re not surfers, although I’ve pretended to be on multiple locations. I love everything about surfing, the beautiful sun-kissed and effortlessly cool vibe that surfers portray, the connection to nature and the raw power of the ocean. I have surfed in Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada and Costa Rica and have progressively gotten worse with each attempt.
The near-death drownings, tripping over your surf leash, getting pummelled by even the smallest of waves and the constant and unrelenting fear of sharks keep me coming back.
Despite all this putting a surfboard under your arm, feeling the sand between your toes and paddling out to the break still feels great.
Surf towns have an easiness to them and they are often laid back with great food and cold beers never that far away. Raglan had all of the charm and laid-back feel you could want and the few days we spent here were great.
A large part of why we enjoyed Raglan so much was staying at Kent’s cabin which was about a 10-minute drive from town. Located at the rear of their large farm property and down a winding gravel track was this secluded and private cabin.
The pictures give you a glimpse into how beautiful it was but they don’t do it justice. The property felt warm, inviting and even luxurious.
The hot outdoor shower was special and hard to leave and the same goes for the bathtub on the deck. The sound of nothing but nature at this cabin was calming and it felt like you were a million miles away from everyone which is needed in today’s world.
A car is necessary to stay here and that gives you the opportunity to explore the Raglan area when you’re not surfing of course. Bridal Veil Falls is less than 20 minutes away and it’s a beautiful drive through the countryside. The hike itself is easy and falls are truly stunning.
There are a ton of great options for accommodation in Raglan but we can’t speak highly enough of Kent’s cabin and highly recommend it.
